SALT LAKE CITY — State lawmakers have given the Utah Debate Commission $2.5 million to help with their bid to bring a presidential debate to Utah in 2020. But millions more taxpayer dollars could be designated for the event if they win.

There will be three presidential debates and one vice presidential debate next year.

If Utah wins one of those bids, the event would be held at the Jon M. Huntsman Center at the University of Utah. The university is working with the commission on the bid.

The extra money would help pay for security and other expenses.

Utah almost held a Republican debate in 2016 until then-candidate Donald Trump pulled out.
