SALT LAKE COUNTY — Some big changes are happening in the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s office, and they’re bringing back a well-known name in law enforcement.

The office is forming a new Investigations Division to handle their growing number of cases, and they’re bringing back a man who used to oversee investigations all the time in the county — former sheriff Jim Winder.

“He has a practical knowledge of all aspects of investigations,” said Salt Lake County DA Sim Gill, adding, “We’re excited.  It’s a great opportunity for us.  I’m glad it worked out for both of us.”

Winder already has a lot of work to do, and he hasn’t even started yet.  Gill said the county has been steadily going through rapid growth, and their caseload is climbing with the population.

“We’ve had a seven thousand caseload increase in the past eight years,” Gill said.

Winder will manage 13 investigators in his new department; however, Gill said they still need more.

“We are probably around six to eight investigators short just to keep up with the workload we have,” he said.
