SOLITUDE — Some northern Utah ski resorts say they’re not worried about avalanches despite getting rain and over a foot of snow during this latest spring storm. And many are preparing for a few more inches before the weekend is out.
It’s been a great year for the lodges. The snowy winter has dumped more than 500 inches of powder in many places. That’s as tall as a four-story building.
But there have been some challenges as well. Solitude Mountain Resort spokeswoman Sara Huey says they’re constantly trucking out the snow that gets piled up in their parking lots and snow banks.
“When you’re plowing a parking lot each day, the snow can’t remain on the surface, spread out, like it falls. But where do you put it?” she said.
The resorts say so far, what has fallen with this storm has been mostly powdery, not wet, and they do a lot of avalanche prevention measures as a precaution.
However, the National Weather Service says there is a risk of flooding if a hot summer melts all that powder too quickly.
