SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Department of Transportation is urging people to give themselves a little extra time to get to their destination this Memorial Day weekend because the freeways may be plugged.

“On I-15 in Salt Lake and Utah counties, heading southbound on Friday night, we’re going to see delays up to 40 minutes,” said spokesman John Gleason.

Drivers in Davis County can expect delays up to 30 minutes, assuming there are no accidents.

Two lanes on I-15 will be closed overnight Friday in Lehi for a construction project, while I-70 in Sevier County will be down to one lane in some places for the same reason.

Gleason says people are hitting the road despite higher gas prices because Memorial Day is the traditional start of summer vacation.

People are also being encouraged to keep an eye out for drunk or distracted drivers, and to put down their own cell phones, because there are more fatal crashes on Utah’s highways over Memorial Day weekend than normal.
