SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Farmer’s Market kicks off Saturday, June 8th at Pioneer Park and along with the fruits and veggies that will be around in their booths something else there too.
Narcan and Naloxone.
Both the state and Salt Lake County health departments made a donation of hundreds of doses of the life-saving medicine to the Odessey House of Utah and they’ll be handing it out for free.
The Odessey House is a drug and alcohol treatment clinic with multiple clinics around the Salt Lake Valley and Media Director Randall Carlisle believes that everyone in Utah should have these medications on hand.
“Several people in Odessey house say they’ve died several times in their lives and have been saved by their friends that had Naloxone,” Carlisle said.
According to utahnaloxone.org, Naloxone has been available to the general public since 1996, and since 2017 all 50 states had passed laws allowing for its use.
Carlisle says that Utah used to be in the top ten states with the highest percentage of overdose deaths but since people became aware of these medicines, the state has moved off that top ten list.
