ELK RIDGE, Utah — The US Senate will consider whether a Utah County mountain peak should be named “Miracle Mountain,” for blocking flames from getting to homes last year.

Thousands of Woodland Hills and Elk Ridge residents had all evacuated as the Bald Mountain Fire marched closer. But then it stopped. Officials and residents called it a miracle.

“Adversity always brings out the best in Utahns, and the tragic fires in Utah County last fall were no different,” said Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, the bill’s sponsor. “I am proud to help honor the faith and hope of the Elk Ridge community by naming the peak where the fire halted Miracle Mountain.”

The fire started by lightning and burned more than 18,000 acres last August and September.

Utah Representative John Curtis introduced a bill to rename the peak in the House last year.
