KANAB — An Arizona man is dead after an accident involving a UTV, or Utility Terrain Vehicle, at Utah’s Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park.

The Utah Department of Natural Resources said Mark Allred, 46, of Cottonwood, Arizona, was riding a UTV near the northern end of the dunes with one passenger when the vehicle crashed. The passenger was able to transport themselves for medical treatment.

Witnesses at the scene gave Allred CPR while others called for help and waited for the arrival of Utah State Parks rangers and Kane County Sheriff’s deputies. Responders pronounced Allred dead at the scene.

In a statement, Utah State Parks said Allred was not wearing a helmet. They do not suspect alcohol was a factor in the accident.

Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park is in Kane County near the Arizona state line, west of Kanab and southeast of Zion National Park. The sand dunes are a popular destination for families with off-road vehicles. The park’s website features a section on off-highway vehicle safety that recommends all riders wear helmets.
