LITTLE COTTONWOOD CANYON – A woman who disappeared in Little Cottonwood Canyon is alive.
Unified Police search and rescue volunteers began combing the canyon for the missing hiker shortly after she was reported missing on the Fourth of July.
The missing hiker, 41-year-old Dawn Rohde left the Red Pine trailhead around 7:30 a.m, according to officials with the Unified Police Department of Greater Salt Lake said
A family friend said she called her husband around 1:30 p.m. on Thursday to say she was going to try to cross a ridge line into the Red Pine Lake area.
Late on Thursday, the members of her trail running group, the Wasatch Mountain Wranglers, were headed up the trails to locate their running colleague.
She was not heard from again until late Friday afternoon.
Previously, police asked that anyone who may have seen Rohde on the trails to give them a call. Hikers are the ones who located the lost hiker, reports say.
Officials are not sure why Rohde did not come down from the mountain.
Jason Scott, a friend of Rohde’s at the Wasatch Mountain Wranglers hiking group, was worried about the storms that hit the area yesterday.
“The conditions up there, how much snow there is. We had lots of thunderstorms and freak hailstorms that came through [yesterday],” Scott said.
Rescuers, who used helicopters to help find Rohde, hoped she was able to take shelter when the storms hit.
Investigators also tried to track her by tracking her cell phone.
