A wildfire in Spanish Fork Canyon has prompted evacuations
RENO, Nev. — Police and firefighters are responding to an explosion at dormitory at the University of Nevada, the Associated Press reports.
The Reno Gazette Journal reports that eight people have been injured by the blast.
Police are reportedly calling the explosion a “utilities accident.”
Officials with student housing have sent a message to students, advising them to stay clear of the area.
“Police and fire are investigating an incident on campus. Please advise to stay away between 9th street and College Dr. Information will be posted as it’s available,” the statement reads.
The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office told the Journal that everyone’s safety is the sheriff office’s first priority.
Those who were hurt in the explosion only suffered minor injuries, according to Kolo8, a TV station in Nevada.
Student Raven Green told the Associated Press that it felt like an earthquake.
“It was very scary,” Green said. “I’m still a little worried. I feel like nothing is happening. It’s been a long time now.”
Green said she saw firefighters and a bomb squad outside of the dormitory.
Posts on social media portray extensive damage to the dorm building.
Windows appear to be blown out. Broken glass, bricks, and other debris is scattered on the ground in front of the dorm.
