CAMP WILLIAMS, Utah — A live-fire exercise at Camp Williams yesterday sparked a wildfire.
Major Toby Adamson says that “They were shooting a 50-caliber weapon, and the round hit and caused a spark.”
This comes 10 years after another live-fire exercise at Camp Williams sparked the Machine Gun Fire that burned thousands of acres and three homes.
Sunday’s fire is the first time one has burned since there has been significant growth in the area.
Herriman resident Eric Platt says that he knows that Camp Williams is prepared but, “You just never know where it’s going to start or how quickly it’s going to burn.”
Major Adamson says they have taken significant steps to respond to fires since that fire 10 years ago and hope to be good neighbors.
“We run a large training facility here at Camp Williams, and have a lot of great neighbors Eagle Mountain and Herriman, and we want to play as a good neighbor to them.”
Two helicopters, 20 ground vehicles, and 60 guard personnel responded to the fire.
