VERNAL, Utah — Two people, the flight instructor and a student, are recovering in the hospital after a plane crash just after takeoff Monday morning in Uintah County.

The Uintah County Sheriff’s Office says that the plane crash happened during a training flight when the small Cessna 162 Skycatcher stalled shortly after takeoff.

Authorities say the 27-year-old instructor was demonstrating a takeoff technique when the aircraft lost power about 100 feet in the air. After an unsuccessful attempt to regain power, the small plane crashed onto the shoulder of the runway and ended up in a grassy area.

Rescue workers initially took the instructor and the 18-year-old trainee to Ashley Regional Medical center for treatment. Later, crews transported one of the two individuals to Salt Lake City for further treatment.

The National Transporation Safety Board will be investigating the crash.
