SALT LAKE CITY – A person has died following an officer-involved shooting in Salt Lake City. But what led up to the incident is not clear.

Salt Lake City Police say two officers responded to the Park Place Apartments on 350 E. 700 South Monday evening after someone hung up during a 911 call. Shots were then fired.

Tyler Diesenberg, who lives across the street thought he had heard fireworks at first.

“We heard a bunch of cops running in. Within seconds, probably another 10 cop cars just converged from all directions,” Diesenberg said.

Sergeant Keith Horrocks says the officers tried to help after the shooting.

“Medical responded and took over life-saving measures from the officers on the scene. [The] suspect has passed away on scene,” Horrocks said.

It’s not known why the officers drew their weapon or whether the suspect was armed or had threatened officers.

The family of the suspect says they will make a statement later this morning.
