Alyssa Hewlett spotted the moose precariously perched on the cliff at Nipper's Harbour, Newfoundland. The next thing she knew, it had plunged into the water.
A woman’s video of a moose, awkwardly cliff-diving off the coast of Canada’s Newfoundland, is quickly going viral.
Alyssa Hewlett and her fiancé were on a boat Aug. 8, 2019, in the waters of Nipper’s Harbour, Newfoundland, when they saw the moose barely balanced on the edge of the cliff.
“We saw him struggling, so we decided to take our speedboat out for a look,” Hewlett said.
Cell phone video captured the moose’s predicament, then the moment when it appeared to lose its balance, running off the edge of the cliff and landing in the water with a giant splash. The person filming can be heard exclaiming, “Oh, no! Is she gone?”
Moments later, the animal emerges and swims off, apparently unhurt by the cliff-diving adventure. Moose have the ability to close their nostrils so that they can stay underwater longer.
Moose, which live throughout the northern US, Canada and Eurasia, are actually born knowing how to swim and they keep that ability as adults. They are the largest members of the deer family, with some of the biggest males weighing up to 1,500 pounds.
