SALT LAKE CITY — The University of Utah has a new way for students, faculty and staff to move safely around campus at night.
The free service is called SafeRide. The University says it’s comparable to Uber and Lyft, in that you use an app to request a ride to and from any location on campus.
The campus community can use SafeRide from 6 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Monday through Friday.
In a statement, the University said the service is available to anybody in the university community. But they stress it is especially meant to serve students on campus at night who need a safe ride to a parking lot, student housing, or to another building on campus.
SafeRide is offered through an app called TapRide, which you can download wherever you get your apps. Once it’s on your phone, choose University of Utah. You’ll also need your university ID or UNID, and your password to prove your student or faculty status. Your phone’s location services help get the driver to your exact location. You can tell the driver, via the app, to honk so that you know it’s a SafeRide driver.
And all of the drivers are students of the University of Utah.
The service excludes Research Park. Employees and students there have another shuttle service called Hospital On Demand.
