SOUTH SALT LAKE – The Teen Tech Center has opened at the Columbus Library in South Salt Lake. The afterschool program aims to teach teenagers the basics of careers in the STEM fields, or, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.
But it’s not your traditional science center. Teens can work with 3D printers, as well as podcasting and film making equipment.
Alex Peacock with The Promise South Salt Lake, the group who runs the center, believes it helps students get a leg up in the new economy.
“There are a lot of opportunities for them to not only be creative but to help contribute to society in meaningful ways,” Peacock says.
A grant from Best Buy paid for most of the center, which can hold 30 people and is open from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on school days.
The Promise South Salt Lake has plans to expand it in the future.
