SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah Gov. Gary Herbert has called lawmakers into a special session on Sept. 16 on medical marijuana and other issues, but tax reform is not on the agenda.

The Deseret News reported Friday that income taxes in Utah must be used for education, but they are outgrowing the sales taxes that make up the bulk of the general fund.

The Republican governor says the tax issue was removed last session, and a task force was created to come up with a proposal that could be passed by the Legislature following House and Senate Republican supermajority approval.

Officials say that task force is only halfway through four study meetings scheduled through October and has yet to make any decisions about fixing the growing imbalance between the state’s key revenue sources.
