PROVO, Utah — On Friday, September 13th, dozens of BYU law school students, alumni and lawyers will offer their services for free! But the offer is for a very special audience. They want to help first responders or military member in Utah who wants to create a free will.
That includes paramedics, firefighters, military members, law enforcement officers and corrections officers. It also includes their spouses, veterans and past first responders.
Online registration is on a first-come, first-served basis, and can be found here.
The Utah State Bar Young Lawyers Division has held events like this in the past. But this “Wills for Heroes” event is a first for BYU Law. They’ll have more people helping than ever before, said Adam Balinski, the director of external relations at the BYU law school.
He says they have 36 people lined up to help what they hope will be 130 clients in just one morning.
“If you were to total up the value of that time being donated, it would be $30,000 in attorney fees,” said Balinski.
The services include some basic estate planning, like a basic will, power of attorney, advanced health care directive, and custody decisions for children left behind.
“It’s super helpful even though it is basic. It’s way better than not having something, and letting whatever the policy is at the time in the state where you live decide what happens to your things or your children,” he said.
