BIG COTTONWOOD CANYON — Solitude Ski Resort will be introducing a number of initiatives to attempt to reduce traffic in Big Cottonwood Canyon and promote car-pooling and better air quality.  One of those initiatives is that vehicles carrying only 1 or 2 people will now be charged $20 to park as well as investing in a ride-sharing app.

“We are using every tool at our disposal to encourage our staff and guests to use public transportation and to develop carpooling habits,” says Solitude’s President & COO Kim Mayhew. “We are committed to reducing congestion in Big Cottonwood Canyon to in order to preserve our canyon’s delicate environment.”

Changes to the parking structure will be tiered according to how many passengers are in the car. If there is just 1 or 2 passengers parking will cost the driver $20. If there are 3 people the charge drops to $10, and if there are 4 passengers parking will be $5.

That’s why Solitude says they are investing in a ride-sharing app to connecting skiers and snowboarders to share available space in their personal vehicles. Solitude says that their app will include incentives for teaming up and plan to announce more details later this fall.

The resort has also added over 100 new lockers for mountain-goers that to make it easier for those using public transportation.

Solitude plans to open on Saturday, November 23, 2019 if conditions permits and expects the season to last through early April.
