SARATOGA SPRINGS, Utah – Hundreds of students will take their first classes at Lake Mountain Middle School today, about a month after the campus was supposed to open. However, construction at the school is far from over.

During an open house yesterday, students said some of the buildings they will be using need more work.

“There’s a lot of open walls that are not painted,” 9th grader Nicole Bradley said.

Her friend Cassidy Cundiff agreed.

“My brother, who is in 7th grade, one of his classrooms won’t be done so he had to get a new teacher to go to a different classroom,” Cundiff said.

The classroom buildings were scheduled to open last week, however, the fire marshal would not grant a certificate of occupancy.

He made a final walkthrough of the buildings on Tuesday.

The Alpine School District said in a statement to parents that, “[The fire marshall] assessed all safety systems or potential hazards and we are confident we can provide a safe, engaging learning experience for your students when we start school.”

Teachers had been allowed in the buildings for the past week to set up their classrooms.

Construction of the campus had been delayed for several weeks because of the wet weather Utah experienced earlier in the year.

The eastern half of the school, including the gym, is still being built.
