SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah — An AMBER ALERT is now over.
It was late Wednesday evening when police say a 3-month-old girl named Khaliya Alvarez-Caro was taken from her legal guardians in their apartment.
Police were looking for a grey Toyota which was found early Thursday morning by Wyoming Highway Patrol in Lander, Wyoming.
“Good news for everybody that this has ended well. The child is safe and sound and we couldn’t be more delighted,” said Gary Keller with the South Salt Lake Police Department.
Keller says Khaliya’s biological parents abducted her from her legal guardians, who are her grandparents.
The parents apparently entered the apartment through a basement window and pushed through the grandparents to get the baby.
The parents then jumped into a gray car with two other unknown adults and took off with the infant.
South Salt Lake police say they Gabriel Brandon Caro, age 19, and Jasmine Angelica Alvarez, age 21. Police say they have a history of drug abuse, domestic violence and homelessness.
Both are now in custody. Alvarez was arrested in Wyoming and Caro was found in the Salt Lake City downtown area.
Police believe the mother was headed to the Wind River Reservation before she was stopped.
“We just need to work out the logistics now to bring the mother back to Utah. DCFS is going to assist in getting the child back to the grandparents,” said Keller.
