BOX ELDER COUNTY – Is there something wrong with the stretch of I-15 where a UHP trooper was hit this weekend? Many drivers say standing water has been a huge problem for a long time, but, what is UDOT doing about it?
Interstate 15 by mile marker 398 is not the only place where standing water becomes a problem during serious storms. However, UDOT engineers acknowledge it has a problem with drainage during heavy rain.
Region One Spokesman Vic Saunders says they’re going to take a close look at this problem. “We’re going to have our surveying people look at that,” he says, adding, “[They’ll] see if there’s something unique with this stretch. If there is, they’ll identify it and then we’ll make a determination exactly what we can do.”
However, don’t expect changes to happen soon. Once the problem is determined, Saunders says they’ll have to design the construction plans, hire contractors and find funding.
“It could be as early as next Spring or Summer before we could do something about that, but it would not be immediate,” Saunders says.
In the meantime, UDOT is asking the public to watch their speeds in the rain.
Saunders says, “The speed limit is set for a speed that is reasonable and prudent in good weather. When the weather is not good, slow down.”
