SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — A fire broke out in between two houses near 73 L Street, between 1st and 2nd Avenue, in Salt Lake City on Wednesday morning.

Fire crews say someone walking by noticed the smoke and flames, and pounded on the doors and windows to get people in the two homes to get out in time.

The fire spread up between the homes to their roofs and attics.

Captain Tony Stowe says they called out a second alarm to make sure they could knock the fire down quickly and then punched holes into the roofs.

“Any time we have a confined space like an attic, we have to remove the smoke and flames,” Stowe told KSL Newsradio.  “Changing the conditions alters the course of a fire, if you will, to our benefit.”

They expected to be on the scene for several hours watching for hot spots. Stowe said fire investigators were on the scene trying to determine the cause of the fire.
