SALT LAKE CITY — Smith’s Food & Drug Stores is accepting Visa Credit Cards again.

The announcement was made quietly on the store’s website with a banner on the home page, and confirmed by Kroger to KSLNewsRadio, that the grocer would now “accept Visa credit cards, plus Mastercard, American Express, Discover and all debit and HSA cards,” at all Kroger family stores.

“Kroger now accepts Visa credit cards at all our family of stores including Smith’s and Foods Co.” Aubriana Martindale, Smith’s Food & Drug Corporate Affairs Manager

The grocer said they originally decided to stop accepting Visa Credit Cards due to “the excessive interchange and network fees that Visa and its issuing banks charge retailers,” fearing that it would drive up food prices.

Smith’s employs over 20,000 associates and operates 55 stores in Utah; 45 stores in Nevada; 23 stores in New Mexico; 7 stores in Wyoming; and 4 stores each in Idaho, Montana and Northern Arizona.
