TOOELE —  The Tooele Police Department has confirmed that the body of a man found in a freezer is 69-year-old Paul Edward Mathers, the husband of the deceased female also found at the residence.  She was identified as 75-year-old Jeanne Souron-Mathers

Confirmation came from the Medical Examiner and State Crime Lab, which used fingerprints from the deceased male for identification purposes.

The autopsy did not reveal a cause of death. Tooele police also say the autopsy did not indicate when the man died.

Both bodies were discovered on Friday, November 22, while detectives were checking the welfare of an elderly woman who lived in the home.

Sgt. Jeremy Hansen said officers were called to the Remington Park Apartments on 495 W. Utah Ave, after neighbors reported no one had seen 75-year-old Jeanne Souron-Mathers for weeks. Police found her body on her bed. Hansen said that’s when the officer called in a detective.

“When he arrived, he starts investigating,” said Hansen. “He sees a deep freezer, or a chest freezer in the apartment. He opens it up and he finds an unidentified adult male, deceased, inside the freezer,” Hansen told KSL.

Hansen said it’s possible the body could have been in the freezer, for as many as 11-years. Police say there’s no evidence of foul play in Souron-Mather’s death, but the man’s death is suspicious.

Police are hoping confirmation of the man’s identity will help them put together more pieces in the puzzling case.
