WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah — A West Valley teenager made quite the donation to his former school, after working on an Eagle Scout Project with special meaning.
17-year-old Cameron Evans donated 71 white canes to the Utah Schools for the Deaf and Blind on Thursday morning.
Cameron is blind, and used to attend the school in Salt Lake City and Ogden. He now is a senior at Cyprus High School. He has depended on a white cane for many years. “It’s how I see,” he explained.
For the last several months, he raised funds and got donations from around the world for the canes and other supplies to give to younger students.
“I like the tapping tip. The smaller one is like a softball,” said Cameron.
“The smaller children usually use the ball tips, it’s a rolling tip. It gives them more feedback and they can learn how to use them,” added his father Richard.
Each cane can cost around 25 dollars, and children can go through around 3 a year as they grow up. Sometimes other people accidentally break or snap someone’s cane.
Cameron actually used a wedding gift registry as a way for people to buy the canes for his project
“They didn’t purchase them directly, they ordered them on Amazon and they came directly to our house from Ambutech,” said Cameron’s father Richard Evans.
They had more than $1,000 cash given to them to help the schools as well. The School’s Director Ryan Green said the donations were incredible.
“The love and support from our community is wonderful. It’s great having Cameron put in the work. It’s not easy to do an Eagle Scout Project, but this is going to be something he remembers for a long time,” said Green.
