Thirty-percent of Americans have chronic pain. That’s over 100 million people who struggle with pain every single day. With many people struggling with opioid addiction that can destroy lives, you may be wondering what other options are out there to help you if you are struggling with pain. Here are 7 opioid alternatives to try.

Meditation

You may think meditation is silly. Actually it might be your first line of defense while dealing with pain. A recent study of adults with chronic back pain showed that over 26 weeks, mindfulness treatments like meditation, resulted in observable improvements in back pain and being functional.

Exercise/Healthy Diet

Not only is it important to do these even if you aren’t struggling with pain, eating right and exercising can physically help pain symptoms. Exercise is especially effective. When you exercise you release natural endorphins that can actually relieve the physical sensation of pain. And eating well can help your body heal when you are able to maintain a healthy weight. Plus this also helps aid in digestion and can also reduce your risk for heart disease at the same time.

Be Conscientious of Your Schedule

One of the most important things to remember is that if you deal with a lot of pain, you need to be mindful of your schedule. Going above and beyond might be great for your employer, but it might not be great for your pain. Take time to relax away from your phone or other devices. Stress can increase pain if you aren’t careful. Try to find healthy outlets for dealing with your stress.

Massage

Like meditation, this one may seem a little too holistic. Not only are all these methods safe, but they can even naturally release dopamine stimulating endorphins that help you move and function better. Besides, the occasional massage can leave you feeling relieved and stress-free for a few days.

Quit Smoking

This one is a no brainer. Sure, it can give you cancer. But smoking can increase pain sensations. Smoking cigarettes can even lead to slow healing, poor circulation, and increased joint damage and disease. Just stop smoking.

Medications

There are many medications out there for pain management. Using simple combinations of Ibuprofen (Advil) and Acetomeniphine (Tylenol) can drastically help your pain. Of course, it should go without saying that you should talk to your doctor. Currently, there are many people struggling with addiction to medications prescribed by their doctors. Namely, opioids. It’s been dubbed an opioid epidemic and communities are having a hard time trying to fight it. It’s best to find opioid alternatives.
