SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — The first Utah baby of the decade is resting in the neonatal intensive care unit after being born just past midnight Jan. 1 at Intermountain Medical Center in Salt Lake City.

The baby girl arrived a month and a half early, being born at only 38 weeks. She hasn’t been named yet.

The parents of the 5-pound, 8-ounce infant say they were hardly caught off-guard at the early arrival. The father is an emergency room physician and said he’s “used to working nights” so it wasn’t too perplexing.

“This feels normal for us,” he said. “It’s not our first time we’ve had a surprise with a delivery.”

The parents did not wish to release their name to the media and declined any interview requests.
