Building character and self-confidence are both important for children navigating life’s challenges, especially in school. Running Forward is a program that helps elementary school students do that by encouraging healthy habits and perseverance through walking, running, and other physical activities.

Running Forward started as a service project directed by University of Utah students, but has since grown into a non-profit organization that’s helped more than 700 elementary school students. Utilizing volunteers and community members, the program has been implemented in 10 schools within the Salt Lake City School District. They provide the resources and knowledge needed to overcome daily battles and encourage students to set and achieve physical, academic, and personal goals, including an end-of-year 5k.

As the program expands, so does the need for volunteers and donations. If you would like to donate your time or a pair of shoes to children in the program, please visit runningforward.org.

SelectHealth recognizes the meaningful life skills taught by Running Forward as another example of how Utah Gives Back.
