TOOELE – While the teen accused in the Grantsville killings will be kept inside the juvenile detention center, some business owners in Tooele County are trying to raise funds for the surviving members of the Haynie family.

There are times when Chubby’s Café on Main Street will be so busy, a line will form out the door.  However, owner Joe Moak says they never see it happen by 5:30 on a Monday evening.

By that time, Moak estimated they had done $6,300 in sales, which equates to roughly $2,000 in profits, and they hadn’t reached their peak sales time, yet.

Moak isn’t going to see a dime of that.  All of the profits from Monday’s sales will go toward a GoFundMe account set up for the Haynie family.

He says, “We thought, ‘Well, if we do a fundraiser just for a day, hopefully, we could raise a bunch of money and the community could come and show their support.’”

Moak says many of his customers are still having a hard time dealing with the murders of Alejandra, Alexis, Matthew and Maylan Haynie.  He says some of his employees went to school with the accused shooter, CJ Haynie.

“It hit home with so many people because it’s something that you would not expect in such a tiny town like this,” he says.

Even though Tooele County is growing, Moak says it still feels like a “small town.”  He believes residents in this community rally to support each other better than any other place he has seen.

He says, “Everybody is so close-knit and everybody knows everybody, still.”

We want to hear from you.
