SALT LAKE CITY — An unflattering picture is making the rounds on social media.

It shows a Salt Lake City police officer holding up his middle finger to someone on the street.  But the Salt Lake Police Department says it’s a fake.

The supposed incident occurred when officers were asked to help the Health Department clean out a homeless camp at the Salt Lake City Library.  The photo appears to show an officer making an obscene gesture at a person who was recording him.

Taken from the person recording the officer.

The department compared the picture to its own body cam footage, taking from a different angle.  It shows the same officer holding up two fingers while speaking to the person.

Salt Lake officials also used fotorensics.com which they say indicates the picture was changed.  Police say the original video, which the altered pictures were taken from has not been posted — only the fake photos.
