SALT LAKE CITY – The Salt Lake City Council has approved a $1 million loan for affordable housing. The complex is to be built at 535 West 300 North.

Most of the apartments in the 80 unit complex will be affordable to those making 50% or less of the median income.

The plan from Diamond Rail Apartments, LLC will also include electric vehicle charging stations, a picnic area, a fully furnished community room, playground, and space on the bottom level for a restaurant.

The apartments would replace an old auto body shop.

Although the council unanimously approved the $1 million loan for affordable housing project, some questioned why there was not a lot of green space.

Developer representative Ivan Carroll said they tried to add it, but they were denied by the zoning department.

“[The] code doesn’t allow us to do us to do too much with the park strips [around the building],” Caroll said.

Salt Lake City has committed millions of dollars to help finance affordable and transitional housing projects, including at least two others over the past year.
