MAGNA, Utah — A 69-year-old father was taken into custody Thursday night after what police called an armed barricaded domestic situation in Magna.  UPD police detective Kevin Mallory says about 5:50 p.m. 9-1-1 dispatch received a call from a woman who claimed her 69-year-old father had taken a golf club and smashed up things in a home near 8000 West 2700 South.  According to Det. Mallory, the man attempted to strangle her.

“There’s a known history at this home we’ve been here several times and are pretty familiar with the occupants of the home.  There’s a history and a report of weapons inside the home,” says Mallory.

He says officers tried to get the man to come outside of the home.  Initially, he did not cooperate, but officers were able to get the victim safely outside the home and out of harm’s way.

“After getting some additional information from the victim, our officers made entry into the home where we found the suspect.  He was non-complaint and had to be tased, then was taken into custody about 6:58 p.m.,” according to Mallory.

Det. Mallory says no officers were injured and the victim was OK.  So far, they are not releasing the name of either the victim or the father.

Authorities had at one time asked residents in the area to remain in their homes and for motorists to stay away.
