As the news about the novel coronavirus, COVID-19 grows, it’s important to know how to protect yourself and your family. This will also protect you from other respiratory illness and viruses such as the flu and the common cold.

The most important safety measure is proper hand hygiene with soap and water numerous times daily.  The daily habit includes washing with soap and warm water for 20 seconds every time. You can use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water is not available. But make sure that hand sanitizer is not replacing your regular handwashing routine. Also, avoid touching your face and eyes as much as possible.

Avoid close contact with people who are sick. If you are sick yourself, stay home and keep sick children at home from school.

Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze then toss it in the garbage and wash your hands. If you have to, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve or elbow – and not directly into your hands.  For more information visit health.utah.gov
