MILLCREEK — Two unrelated shooting deaths in the past few days have occupied police in Layton and Millcreek.  Police are interviewing possible witnesses in one case, but the other incident has officers puzzled.

The first, and more baffling case, happened in Millcreek.  Investigators were called after reports of shots fired near 4500 South and 800 East late Wednesday night.  When an officer got to the scene, he saw the victim, Linda Nemelka from Murray, had a gunshot wound to her leg.  That officer wrapped a tourniquet on her and called for medics.

Unified Police Sergeant Melody Gray says, “There was more than just one gunshot wound.  That’s just what he saw at that time.”

Gray says Nemelka was found in the driver’s seat of her car, apparently getting ready to go home after visiting a friend.

“She was unconscious at that time.  Unified Fire Authority arrived and transported the female to the hospital where she succumbed to her injuries,” Gray says.

There are reports of a dark SUV leaving the area, but, apart from that, Gray says they have extremely little to go on.  They hope someone will remember seeing something suspicious or come forward if they have any additional information.

“We have no idea what the motive was or who a potential suspect may be.  So, we’re completely open to any possibilities at this time,” she says.

The second shooting happened in Layton. An 18-year-old male was shot multiple times in his basement.  The Deseret News reports the victim went upstairs to tell his mother what happened. He later died at the hospital.  One person has been taken into custody for questioning.
