SALT LAKE CITY – Intermountain Healthcare and University of Utah Health are postponing some non-urgent, elective medical procedures because of COVID-19.

Two of Utah’s largest healthcare systems want to make sure there are enough hospital beds and medical supplies in case the COVID-19 pandemic becomes more serious in Utah.

It will also free up staff to help patients with COVID-19, according to a joint statement from Intermountain and University of Utah Health.

Patients who were expecting those surgeries will be notified over the next few days. However, people should call their doctors if they have any questions.

The University of Utah Health system is also postponing non-urgent clinic visits to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

Intermountain Healthcare and the University of Utah say this is part of a broad state effort at “social distancing”, at least for the next few weeks, to combat COVID-19.
