Paying rent and mortgages during the COVID-19 pandemic

SALT LAKE CITY — With the first of the month just a couple of days away, many people who’ve lost income are worried about paying rent during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Utah Apartment Association, which represents big multi-unit landlords, has a rent deferral plan in place that you can see on their website. Small private landlords still have their own mortgage payments and expenses. Glenn Bailey with the Crossroads Urban Center says they need help too.

“We think that the governor should be acting and announcing a statewide moratorium and we’re working with the banking community to try and help small landlords,” Bailey said.

Governor Gary Herbert’s office says that idea is definitely under discussion, but they don’t have a firm plan to announce just yet.
