SALT LAKE COUNTY — A 29-year-old Utah man is dead from a fall in the Storm Mountain area of Big Cottonwood Canyon Wednesday afternoon.

Unified Police Department Sgt. Melody Gray says the victim called 911 dispatch operators himself around 3:15 p.m., reporting his own fall in Big Cottonwood Canyon. He told dispatchers he’d suffered broken ribs and had face trauma.

Gray says it appears that he was likely hiking or mountain climbing with a friend before falling 15 feet.  She says a helicopter came to hoist him to safety, but by the time that happened, he had already died from his injuries.

The man’s identity is not being released pending notification of next of kin.

The Storm Mountain area of the canyon is popular among both hikers and mountain climbers.

Rescue workers in Utah urge residents to use extreme caution during this time of social distancing while playing outdoors. First responders are needed to help address the influx of patients requiring treatment for COVID-19, or novel coronavirus.
