The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is organizing relief projects all over the world for the coronavirus pandemic. That includes an effort in Utah to sew 5 million masks.
Church leaders have approved over 110 relief projects in 57 countries. A letter from the church’s First Presidency outlines those projects.
“Most of these are done with trusted partners from humanitarian agencies, health ministries and hospitals,” they said. “Which allows us to use our resources—including food, hygiene products, personal protective equipment, medical equipment, cash and other commodities—in places where they can do the most good.”
The women of the Relief Society in Utah are sewing masks for healthcare workers. This is in partnership with Intermountain Healthcare and University of Utah Health.
Beehive Clothing facilities in Utah and several other countries are also temporarily shifting responsibilities. Many will move from manufacturing religious clothing, to sewing face masks and gowns for healthcare workers.
The church has partnerships with many relief organizations around the world through Latter-day Saint Charities.
The First Presidency is inviting church members to participate in their areas and communities as opportunities arise and as local government directives and personal circumstances allow.
“We know that God will hear and answer our prayers. We have been taught to be ‘anxiously engaged’ in relieving suffering and caring for those in need (see Doctrine and Covenants 58:27),” said the First Presidency’s letter.
