SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake City is closing additional streets to allow for more pedestrian and bicycle traffic on Friday.

Mayor Erin Mendenhall made the announcement on Twitter. Portions of Stratford Avenue and Wasatch Drive will be open to pedestrians and bicyclists starting Friday, May 8.

Specifically, the mayor said Stratford Avenue would be open to pedestrians and cyclists between 1300 E. and 2000 E. On Wasatch Drive, the road will be open to walkers and bikers between 1300 S. and Crestview Drive.

This move is part of the city’s push for more public recreation while still allowing for safe social distancing, officials said.

“Opening certain streets for community recreation, such as foot and bicycle traffic, will make it easier to maintain six feet of distance from others. There are multiple streets in Salt Lake City that could be converted into physically distancing-friendly places for people to get outside for activities like walking, running, and biking,” the city wrote online

Stratford Ave. and Wasatch Dr. were selected in part based on responses from a survey done by the city that received more than 6000 responses.

The streets join 500 North from Redwood Road to 800 West, 900 South from 300 East to 700 East and 600 East from 900 South to South Temple, which are also open to pedestrian traffic.

Vehicle access on both streets is still open to local traffic. Drivers are asked to drive slowly and with extra caution.
