OREM, Utah — The Utah Department of Transportation is advising drivers to plan ahead for weekend travels as northbound travel on the I-15 in Orem will be closing. Residents should expect a full closure of that interstate section, as crews plan to install large beams for a new pedestrian bridge at Utah Valley University.

Northbound I-15 is expected to fully close Saturday as soon as 10:30 p.m. at University Parkway and are scheduled to reopen Sunday morning around 10 a.m. Partial lane closures are expected in both directions on I-15 starting Saturday at 6 p.m. until Sunday at 11 a.m.

Detoured traffic will be guided off I-15 at University Parkway, re-entering the interstate at Geneva Road and Center Street.

During this closure, crews will move the beams to University Parkway from the nearby Utah Pacific Steel and Bridge plant in Lindon. Once assembled, the beams will be about 1,000 feet long — roughly the size of 1.5 blocks in downtown Salt Lake City.

The new pedestrian bridge will provide students and faculty a safe route to travel from housing to the UVU campus, becoming the longest pedestrian bridge in Utah. It’s scheduled to open later this year and will be the longest pedestrian bridge in the state.
