Disney announced the original Broadway production of Hamilton filmed live at the Richard Rogers Theater is coming exclusively to Disney Plus on July 3.

Lin-Manuel Miranda and Disney’s executive chairman Bob Iger made the announcement on Twitter early on Tuesday morning. Miranda tweeted, “It’s only a matter of time… Our Hamilton film. THIS July 3rd. On Disney+”

“I can’t think of another work of art in the last decade that’s had the cultural impact of ‘Hamilton,'” Iger said on Good Morning America.

“I just think it’s brilliant and in these times to tell the story of people uniting together against forces of diversity I think is quite relevant and actually quite important.

“We like to tell great stories and I can’t think of a better one to bring forward,” he said.

The making of the film version

Miranda says that the filmed performance of Hamilton that will make its way to Disney Plus was filmed with the original cast in 2016 the week before he left the show.

“I can’t say enough about what an incredible job our director Tommy Kail has done with the movie,” he told GMA.

“He’s basically given everyone at home the best seat in the house. It’s a thrilling experience.”

The move to Disney’s streaming platform comes earlier than expected. Originally, the producers planned to release the film in theaters on October 15, 2021.

Reports from Deadline say that Disney paid $75 million for the worldwide rights for the Tony award-winning show.

The runtime is expected to be two hours and 40 minutes. It was created by filming three live performances.
