Utah releases April Jobs numbers

SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Department of Workforce Services reports that the unemployment rate in April was 9.7%. That accounts for 155,800 Utahns that were unemployed during the month.

“Utah’s strong economy preceding this pandemic offered more cushion against disruption than seen across the rest of the country, thus Utah’s more moderate setback,” Chief Economist Mark Knold said on Twitter.

The Department reports that the biggest losses in April were seen in Leisure and Hospitality Services (-66,700 jobs)  Trade, Transportation and Utilities (-15,400 jobs) and Education and Health Services (-8.800 jobs).

Nate McDonald says that while these numbers aren’t great, Utah is still doing better than the rest of the country where the national unemployment rate is near 15%.
