MIDVALE, Utah — Unified Police have confirmed that an 81-year-old motorcyclist died Tuesday morning after a head-on collision with a wrong-way driver.

The accident initially closed portions of southbound State Street at 7200 S around 5:30 a.m.

Sgt. Melody Gray with Unified Police Department says a vehicle was traveling the wrong way in the southbound lanes when it collided with the motorcycle.

“The motorcyclist is an 81-year-old man,” she said. “He was transported to the hospital and died from his injuries shortly afterward.”

She says another vehicle was also trying to turn right onto State Street. That vehicle was involved in the crash and suffered minor injuries.

Meanwhile, the 22-year-old wrong-way driver, who is currently in custody, did not suffer any injuries.

“He is suspected of being intoxicated,” said Sgt. Gray.

KSL-TV is reporting the identity of the driver as 22-year-old Cesar Riviera-Herrera of West Jordan.

An investigation into the fatal crash is still ongoing.
