City issues “Herriman Bucks” to encourage local shopping and spending

HERRIMAN, Utah — City leaders in Herriman are hoping to encourage residents to shop and spend more locally by sending out what they’re calling “Herriman Bucks.”
The city mailed a $10 “Herriman Bucks” card — basically a coupon — to every home for residents to use toward a $20 purchase at stores inside the city limits.
Assistant City Manager Tami Moody says the Herriman Bucks work at any business in Herriman.
“And that can even include home-based businesses,” Moody said. “We have some home-based businesses that are landscaping or hairdressers or quilt-making, and we wanted to make sure that they were included as well.”
Moody says the program speaks to the spirit of community in Herriman.
“We did kind of want to help them get a little kick start, but we wanted to do something that not only benefitted the local businesses, but benefitted our residents as well,” she said.
Herriman leaders say because the “City Shop Around” program falls under a federal CARES Act grant, they may do it again in the future.
The CARES Act, or Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act, provided a number of grants to state, local and tribal governments. It also covered loans for small businesses to continuing paying employees out of work due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
