SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — A memorial commemorating George Floyd in downtown Salt Lake City was found vandalized Sunday morning, according to witnesses at the scene. The mural depicting Floyd’s face, located at 800 South and 300 West, was splattered with what is suspected to be black paint.

Some witnesses posted on social media the mural was vandalized with black tar, not paint. Salt Lake City Police Department did not respond to comment.

The memorial was painted after Floyd was killed in police custody after an officer kneeled on his neck in Minneapolis. His death has sparked outrage across the country, resulting in nationwide protests and rallies

The vandalism is suspected to have happened sometime between Saturday night and Sunday morning. Volunteers showed up to help clean the paint by 11:30 a.m.

The memorial also features paintings of other men who have been killed by police officers — including Bernardo Palacios, who was killed when he was shot in the back running away from Salt Lake City police officers.
