HOLLADAY, Utah — Westbound I-215 is reopened after lanes were shut down Sunday afternoon because of a nearby fire affecting the freeway.
Unified Fire Authority reports the fire started on the freeway, before moving uphill and burning between two and four acres, according to spokesman Matthew McFarland.
The field fire then spread to a private property, burning some nearby outbuildings and trailers in the surrounding residential area. McFarland said there were no reported injuries and no homes were damaged.
The freeway closed around 4 p.m., but was reopened by about 5:30, according to a tweet from the Utah Highway Patrol.
The cause of the fire is still unknown with an investigation underway. Although the fire is contained, officials say residents can expect to see clouds of smoke coming from the area over the next several hours.
Crews will continue to monitor burn areas.
Earlier today:
Westbound I-215 is closed at 6200 South after a fire broke out close to the freeway, pouring black smoke over the two right lanes. Utah Department of Transportation officials predict the road will be cleared around 4:30 p.m.
It’s unknown whether the cause is a field fire or house fire, according to spokesman Matthew McFarland. However, the department tweeted around 3:30 p.m. the fire was affecting traffic near 2300 East.
