This summer is a little bit different, but there is still so much you can do to enjoy the warmer months. Here are 7 ideas for senior activities you can do this summer.

1. Gardening

Gardening is a great way for seniors to stay active and maintain strength and flexibility. Plus natural social distancing is already built right in. Gardening is a mild aerobic activity and can be easily incorporated into your daily routine. Plant some beautiful flowers. Or plant fruits, veggies, or herbs that you can enjoy later. Since it’s late in the season, few options to plant right now include beets, carrots, green onions, kohlrabi, lettuce, radishes, and turnips. For more info on everything gardening, check out the KSL Greenhouse show.

2. A Socially Distanced Picnic

Right now it’s is more important than ever to connect with the people you love. A great way to do that is to set up a time to have a picnic with them in a backyard, a park or any other outdoor venue where you can share a meal. This will help you stay connected and grounded even in the current uncertainty.

3. Watch a Virtual Concert

With the onset of the pandemic, many artists are turning to virtual means to broadcast their performances. Many artists and venues are doing digital live streams of concerts right now. You can find concerts from The Grand Ole Opry to even the Monterey Jazz Festival being streamed live.

4. Go For a Nature Walk

It may seem simple, but getting out and moving and enjoying what nature has to offer can not only help boost your health and fitness can also really help your mental health. In Salt Lake City, you might consider an outing to Red Butte Gardens. Right now is a perfect time to enjoy the summer growth, and also stay socially distanced. In St. George take a walk around the amazing Red Hills Desert Garden, a beautiful desert conservation garden. Or in northern Utah, the Bear River Bird Refuge is a 74,000-acre National Wildlife Refuge. Accessibility options are available at all these locations as well.

5. Artistic Expression

Creative expression in the form of drawing, painting, sculpting, or any other art form can help get your brain working and focused. These are activities that are fairly inexpensive to get into, but help your mental health by giving an outlet for your emotions.

6. Create an Audio or Video Diary or History

Technology today is amazing. How amazing? Most phones these days can record great quality audio and video? That means you can actually start contributing to your family history with just a few clicks. Record a journal of your day to day life. Or tell stories of growing up and the amazing events that have happened in your life.

7. Find a New Hobby

Now is a great time to start a new hobby. Something you’ve been waiting do for years. That could be learning photography, writing a book, or even learning how to plan an instrument. You could even try learning to cook better. Plus, it gives you a great opportunity to use the foods you’ve grown in your garden!
