SALT LAKE COUNTY — A major Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) project is now 50% complete.  But, a big part of the construction will force drivers off SR-201 overnight starting Tuesday.

UDOT is constructing a bridge from the Mountain View Corridor over the 201 Freeway near 6000 West.  Spokesman John Gleason said they have to close the freeway for safety.

“We’re putting in the bridge beams OVER SR-201.  And you don’t want anyone around when you do that.”

Drivers heading east will be forced to exit the 201 Freeway at 7200 West on Tuesday and Wednesday nights between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.  Commuters will take the frontage road and re-enter the freeway at 5600 West.

On Thursday and Friday nights, the westbound lanes of SR-201 will shut down from 9 p.m to 5 a.m.  This detour takes drivers off the freeway 5600 West and the re-entry point will be at 7200 West.

Once the bridge beams are in place, the final phase of connecting Mountain View Corridor to the 201 Freeway begins.  It’s a four-mile stretch of road from 4100 South to 2100 South — with an exit ramp leading to California Avenue (1300 South).

“It’s the first time the Mountain View Corridor will connect with a major east/west route,” said Gleason.  “And it’s really going to change how people get around the west side of the valley.”

Once complete, the corridor will run about 32-miles from SR-73 in Utah County to SR-201 in Salt Lake County.

There are another three miles UDOT wants to add

Gleason said, “the goal is to run the Mountain View Corridor all the way to I-80.”  That would stretch the road a total of 35-miles. However, funding for the last segment between SR 201 and I-80 is still in the works.

The estimated completion date for this current phase of the Mountain View Corridor project is the summer of 2021.
