Small classes and after-school study halls can help students in Wasatch Academy’s curriculum. But students who struggle with learning differences might need additional help. That’s where the Wasatch Academy Learning Center can help. And all types of students can benefit from this program that focuses on academic and social success. Because study skills and real-life habits are so important in day to day life. Here are 5 reasons why a learning center might be the answer for struggling students.

1. One-on-One Coaching

It shouldn’t be a surprise that one on one lessons and coaching in education can really help struggling students. But Wasatch Academy’s community is really where the benefits lie in their Learning Center. The team is already part of the community. And they are especially driven to help students succeed as the rest of the instructors and staff.

2. Metacognitive Development

Is your student paying attention to HOW they think? That’s metacognition. The goal of metacognitive development is to make a student more self-aware. This can help with understanding their own life experiences more deeply. From what they take away from that understanding, they can begin to find things that help them learn better. Like if they need quiet spaces to learn better. If they need background noise like music playing. Or even if they need to get rid of visual distractions. Metacognitive development can help all these skills.

3. Response Inhibition

Response Inhibition adds more to the metacognitive development. It’s someone’s ability to inhibit or stop a default response to distractions. Distractions are around us every single day. So the goal is to train the student to pay closer attention to their response. And if they are presented with a distraction, they can choose to not become distracted. That’s easier said than done of course. But recognizing, then stopping a distraction response can be a huge help in long term success in learning.

4. Strengthened Emotional Intelligence

Another thing the Learning Center focuses on is emotional intelligence. That’s the ability to identify and manage your own emotions. And it’s also the ability to recognize the emotions of others. Knowing how you respond to stress for example is important to help manage your stress response. This can be broken down into 4 categories: self-management, self-awareness, social awareness, and relationship management.

5. Develop Executive Function Skills

Executive function is a set of a student’s mental skills. These skills include flexible thinking, working memory, and self-control. These are everyday skills to learn, work, and manage daily life. The training the Learning Center offers helps students to complete tasks, get projects done on time, and generally can help students organize their thoughts. Your students’ educational life will become easier, but also their day to day life.
