PAYSON, Utah — Police say a 17-year-old turned himself in around 4 a.m. Saturday after being identified as the suspect in a violent sledgehammer attack that sent one person to the hospital in critical condition.

According to the Payson Police Department, the teen likely faces charges of attempted aggravated murder, aggravated assault, aggravated child abuse, child abuse, burglary of a dwelling, obstruction of justice, criminal trespass and disorderly conduct.

He is currently being held in a juvenile detention facility.

Friday, the Payson Police Department responded after a woman called to report seeing a man attack one of her neighbors with a sledgehammer. Police said that man then dropped the sledgehammer and jumped the woman’s fence, assaulting at least one other adult and a number of children at the home daycare operating from that home with his fists.

The city operated under a shelter-in-place order for a number of hours Friday while police searched for the suspect.

Police did not name the suspect because of his age.
